WAV Trigger Pro

You asked for a smaller WAV Trigger. You asked for USB MIDI. You asked for enhanced MIDI processing, including velocity switching and multi-timbral support. You asked for a single firmware version that could play both mono and stereo files.

Introducing the WAV Trigger Pro, our smallest and most powerful 2-channel audio player. Designed to make it incredibly easy to embed a powerful, MIDI-driven polyphonic audio engine into your own project or product.

As a Qwiic device, it can be powered and controlled via a Qwiic Arduino Library that supports sending MIDI over Qwiic (I2C).

As a USB MIDI Device, it can be plugged directly into a Mac/PC/Linux computer, getting power and showing up as a MIDI I/O device in all your audio apps.

As a MIDI Host, when powered by an external 5V supply, it will supply power to (up to 500mA), and work directly with, any USB MIDI Keyboard or control surface. No computer required!

The WAV Trigger Pro measures only 1.75” by 1.5”, but uses a powerful STM32H750 MCU to provide up to 24 voices of low-latency mono and stereo wave file streaming from a microSD card. It can operate in several different modes:

The WAV Trigger Pro also introduces Presets. Presets are files which describe up to 8 actions per MIDI Note, based on channel and velocity. Each action can start an independent track with individual gain, balance, attack, release and pitch, allowing multiple sounds to be mixed in performance. The ability to assign action velocity ranges allows for velocity switching per note.

Presets are created using a spreadsheet (Excel or Google Sheets,) saved on the microSD as .csv files and loaded via MIDI or Trigger inputs.

Preliminary Specifications:

  • 2 unbalanced output channels

  • Powered USB MIDI Host port supports USB MIDI controllers and control surfaces

  • Supports up to 4096 uncompressed 16-bit, 44.1kHz mono and stereo WAV files – CD quality

  • Play and mix tracks independently and simultaneously, with independent volume, panning and pitch

  • MIDI Notes can trigger up to 8 independent actions, routing tracks to any combination of outputs

  • Up to 8 velocity range assignments per note to trigger alternate samples

  • Each event provides independent pitch offset (in cents), allowing for true multi-sampling

  • Seamless looping over arbitrary track length

  • Trigger-to-sound latency: 5 msecs typ, 12 msecs max

  • 8 digital trigger inputs map to MIDI Note numbers allowing multiple functions per trigger

  • Firmware fades (attacks & decays)

  • Arduino library supports sending MIDI over Qwiic (I2C)

Important! We’ve optimized the WAV Trigger Pro for small size and flexibility, making it suitable for embedding into a wide range of products. As a result, you will need to do some soldering, at a minimum to add your audio output connection. In addition, if you want to be able to update the firmware, you’ll need to install a few header pins and you will also need a USB-to-Serial adapter. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of soldering, we suggest either getting some help or consider using the original WAV Trigger instead.
